This tutorial assumes that the user is:
- Familiar with the functionality
of the Windows operating environment and is able to easily navigate
using Windows Explorer or File Manager.
- Familiar with the Internet, World
Wide Web, and web browsers.
- Using either Netscape Navigator
or MS Internet Explorer, Versions 5.0 or greater.
- Has created a file or files to
publish to the web.
This tutorial will show you:
- How to download and set up Smart
FTP or WS_FTP.
- How to access your web directory
on Knology
- How to upload and download your
documents to/from Knology
Step 1: Download Smart
FTP or WS
FTP. Remember where you choose to save the program.
Smart FTP or WS_FTP allow novice users to utilize the capabilities
of FTP without having to know all the details of the protocol
itself. This is an introduction to using the application to
upload your
files to your web space. For more detailed information, please
read the help files included with the program.
Step 2: Install Smart FTP or
WS_FTP
Locate the new program you installed on your
hard drive, and double click. This should begin the installation
process of the program.
It will install all the start menu shortcuts and desktop icons
for you as well.
Step 3: Configure the software
to connect:
Once opening the FTP program, a screen should come up such
as session properties.
Fill in the information
as requested. The information you will need to fill into
the FTP client:
Site Label or Profile Name: Knology
Host name or address: www.iw.net
Username or User ID: your username
Password: your password
Step 4: Using Smart FTP or WS_FTP
Click on the connect button. It will go through the verification
process. Once you are connected, you may receive a dialog
box stating
that you are connected. Click ok. Then you will see two
columns of folders, one on the left, which are the files
on your
hard drive,
and one on the right where you should see your "web" folder,
which holds the files your files that are on our server.
You can open the web
folder
by
double
clicking,
and move your
files
to that folder. To move files from your computer to the
server, just click and drag them to the web server side.
*It
is very important that the first file you upload, or the "home" page is named "index.html"
or "index.htm" without the quotes. If it is not, you
will not be able to view the files from the web.
Once
you have uploaded the files, you may view them by going
to your web address
which will be
http://www.iw.net/~username where username is the user
ID you use to log in to the Internet or your e-mail.
Example:
If your e-mail address is username@iw.net, then your
web address would be http://www.iw.net/~username
Note: If you have followed the instructions
here and your web folder does not appear when you log in. You
can create your web folder or please call our technical
support team at 888-745-2888 for assistance.
We do not tutor on how to use FTP and create web sites, however
if your problem is a technical situation where your web folder
does
not exist, we will be able to assist you. |
